Yeah, this was a terrific thread.
I do know of one author who did write those stories, more or less.

I distinctly recall an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where the Enterprise is used to fire a bunch of photon torpedoes into a random star to try to manipulate the stellar fusion process. If I remember correctly, the star ends up just blowing up. This is all for a science experiment, mind you. There’s a lot of “It’ll be fine, trust me” in Star Trek.
