SLS vs Launch Tower

NASA spent *decades* launching the Shuttle, so it’s a little surprising that the launch of the SLS caused this much damage.

Huh.

Isn’t part of the problem that that the SSMEs / RS-25s are now under the tank section and thus closer to the tower than they were on the Shuttle ? Plus there’s now four of them rather than three ? Also they now point vertically down, rather than at an angle away from the tower.

Wasn’t there some figure running around that SpaceEx had designed, built and flown a Falcon (1?) for less money than NASA spent on this SLS launch tower? I’m not inclined to look that up right now.
